USER RATING
Puerto Rico or "Rich Port," was aptly named, for early Spanish explorers needed the protection of natural ports for their boats, their only way to get home. Christopher Columbus—Cristobal Colón, in Spanish—discovered the island on his second voyage in 1493, and in 1508 Ponce de León explored and colonized it, naming it San Juan Bautista. Today, it is a unique territory of the United States, the country’s only foothold in Spanish America, and a marvelous tropical land of beaches, rainforests, and Latin hospitality.
